This new study reveals they can also find their way into our cardiovascular system, potentially wreaking havoc on heart health.

Researchers examined artery plaque, the fatty buildup that narrows arteries and contributes to heart attacks and strokes, in over 200 patients undergoing surgery. A significant finding emerged - nearly 60% of patients had microplastics, and even smaller nanoplastics, embedded within their arterial plaque.

Disturbingly, the presence of these plastic particles correlated with a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events. Those with microplastics in their arteries were a staggering 4.5 times more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, or death within a few years compared to those with plastic-free arteries. It's important to note that while this study reveals a troubling link, it doesn't definitively prove that microplastics cause heart problems.
